How to Buy a Minecraft Account Safely in 2026 (Java & Bedrock, Full Access Explained)
Buying a Minecraft account is cheaper than the store price, but only if you know what "full access" means on a Microsoft account, what to check before paying, and the 5-minute lockdown that stops the old owner from ever getting it back.

Minecraft costs around $30 on the official store, so a pre-owned account for a fraction of that is tempting — and when it's done right it works exactly like one you bought yourself. The catch is that every Minecraft account is a Microsoft account now, and a Microsoft account has more ways to be recovered than most games. This guide covers what you're actually buying, what "full access" has to mean, the red flags, and the five minutes of work after delivery that make the account properly yours.
What a "Minecraft account" is in 2026
All Java Edition accounts were moved to Microsoft accounts in 2021–2023. Old Mojang and legacy accounts don't work any more, so if a listing says "Mojang account" or "legacy", it's either out of date or not what it claims.
What you get when you buy one is a Microsoft account (an email address plus password) that owns Minecraft. Since 2022 a PC purchase includes both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so most accounts sold today come with both. A few things change the price:
Edition. Java is what the big multiplayer servers (Hypixel and friends), mods and most of the community use. Bedrock is the cross-platform version for consoles, phones and Windows. "Java & Bedrock" accounts cover both on PC. Console-only ownership (Xbox/PlayStation/Switch) is tied to the console store and is a different product.
Name status. Java usernames can be changed once every 30 days. A "name-changeable" account lets you pick your own name on day one. Short or original ("OG") names cost many times more and are a collector's market, not a shortcut.
Capes and cosmetics. Some accounts carry capes that can't be earned any more (Migrator, MineCon, anniversary and event capes), which pushes the price up. More on that in our capes guide.
Ban status. An account can be banned from specific servers (Hypixel bans are the common one) or, rarely, by Mojang for chat reports. A fresh account should be unbanned everywhere; sellers of cheap accounts should say if a server ban exists.
Full access on a Microsoft account — what it must include
"Full access" means more here than it does for most games. For the account to be truly yours you need:
- The email login for the Microsoft account itself (or a Microsoft account whose email you can change to your own), not just the Minecraft launcher login — they're the same thing now, so a seller offering "Minecraft login only" is offering nothing you can keep.
- No recovery options you don't control. Microsoft accounts can have backup emails, phone numbers and authenticator apps attached. Anything the previous owner left attached is a way back in.
- The ability to change the password and security info without a 30-day wait. Microsoft adds a waiting period when security info is replaced; a good seller has already cleared old recovery info so you don't inherit the wait.
If a listing says "full access" but the seller can't tell you whether recovery info has been cleaned, assume you're buying something they can take back.
On SmurfRealm every account listing states its access type in the specs, and anything that isn't full access isn't allowed on the site.
6 red flags before you pay
- A price that's a few cents. Minecraft accounts cost real money to make because a licence has to be bought. Near-free accounts are recycled, stolen, or will be recovered.
- "Mojang account" or "unmigrated". There's no such thing any more.
- Payment off the platform. Direct crypto, gift cards or "friends and family" removes the escrow that protects you until you confirm delivery.
- No warranty. A fresh account should carry at least 24 hours so a recovery or an old server ban is the seller's problem.
- Skins and capes in the photo of a "fresh" account. Decoration, unless the listing specifically lists those capes.
- A seller with no review history, or a burst of reviews in one week. Steady reviews over months are the signal.
How delivery works on a proper marketplace
Instant-delivery accounts on SmurfRealm appear on your order page the moment payment confirms — email, password and any notes, with copy buttons. Manual-delivery accounts are posted in the order chat within the time shown on the listing. Your money is held until you confirm the account matches the description or the warranty window ends; if it doesn't, you open a dispute from the order page and a human looks at it. The details are on our buyer protection page.
Your first 5 minutes after delivery
- Log in at account.microsoft.com (not only the launcher). If the login fails, say so in the order chat straight away.
- Change the password to something unique.
- Open Security → Advanced security options and remove every recovery email, phone number and authenticator you don't recognise, then add your own. If the seller didn't clean this up and Microsoft starts a 30-day waiting period, tell the seller in the order chat — that's a warranty issue.
- Change the primary email alias to one you control (Your info → Manage how you sign in), then remove the old alias.
- Sign out of all devices from the Devices / security page, then log into the Minecraft launcher and check the profile name and that Java (and Bedrock if listed) shows as owned.
Only after step 4 is the account truly yours. Don't start building a world on it before that.
Is buying an account against the rules?
Account transfer isn't allowed under Microsoft's and Mojang's terms. In practice, accounts that get a new email, password and security info immediately are rarely touched; the ones that get flagged are shared accounts with a long history of different owners. Buying full access from a seller who creates accounts themselves, and locking it down in the first five minutes, is how you keep the risk small — but go in knowing it's a risk, which is what the warranty is for.
Account or key — which should you buy?
If you want to use your own Microsoft account and simply want Minecraft cheaper, you don't need an account at all: a Minecraft key redeemed on your existing Microsoft account gives you the game on an account that was always yours. We compare the two in Minecraft key vs account.
Buy an account if you want a second identity (an alt for a server, a smurf for Hypixel), a name-changeable account for an extra name, or an account that already carries capes.
FAQ
Does the account come with both Java and Bedrock? On PC accounts created after mid-2022, yes. The listing specs say which.
Can I change the username? Java names can change every 30 days. Check the listing says "name changeable" if that matters to you.
What if the account was banned on Hypixel? Within the warranty window, the seller replaces or refunds. After that it's on you, so check the first day.
What about Xbox / PlayStation / Switch? Those are console-store licences; buy a Bedrock console key for the right platform instead.
